Dear Bob, Thank you very much for your call. It would be excellent if we could put this to bed in 2015. I attach the two volumes of the letters in this email and then will send the additional material in the next. You will notice that at the bottom of each letter there is a pdf number. This refers to the pdfs that were photographed at the RAS. I thin it would be good to be able toinclude some of them as they are because it gives the flavour of Webb's handwriting (which cold be worse) But it is the transcription which would be searchable. And on a CD/DVD the volumes could be put back together. Please be as critical as you want. I knoe we could add a lot to the additional material. For example Mark has much fuller notes on Ranyard. Anyway, have a look and see what you think. We think the letters themselves are charming, informal and interesting from many points of view. But then we are biased. Best Janet Some of this is only in a rough state but it will give you some idea of what else there is or could be. The astronomical terms should be done I am sure by one of you! We could certainly thicken up the Hardwick side. I suspect we could include about 20 photos - some of which would need permission. Also, we have done some work on the journals etc but it is far from complete. The "School poem" is in one of the letters but it may amuse you. Here's wishing you both a Very Happy Christmas. Speak to you when you have had time to have a butchers Best, Janet and Mark > >Dear Janet and Mark, > >Many thanks for the files - 6 received in all. It was good to talk to you >yesterday and I look forward to browsing the correspondence. > >I had a brief look this morning and some it is very charming. There >does seem to be quite a large amount of astronomy in here which would be >of interest to the historical astronomers at least. > >Compliments of the season to you both and I'll be in touch in the New >Year. > >Regards, >Bob Subject: Re: More Dear Bob, Thanks for confirmation of getting the Ranyard letters. They are quite fun to read. I have sympathy with Thomas as he repeats himself in the last few letters. Short term memory loss is a bore! To confirm what Janet said on the phone: We could produce an extended article on Ranyard. We have a great deal of material gleaned mainly from research I did quite a few years ago. If DVD format rather than CD seems a possibility than we could raid (with permission) RAS obituaries to provide fuller background material on many of those who are written about by TWW in his letters to ACR. Will be interested to hear views in the New Year. In the meantime, enjoy the festive season
